ENVESOME EU Project: Building the Foundations for Integrated Exposome Research in Europe

In its first eleven months, the ENVESOME project has built a strong foundation for advancing integrated exposome research across Europe, laying the groundwork for innovative approaches to understanding the complex interactions between environment and health.

ENVESOME has successfully established robust project governance, data management, and communication structures that support smooth coordination and transparency. The official ENVESOME web portal has been launched, enhancing visibility and stakeholder engagement across the consortium and beyond.

Key strategic documents, including the Data Management Plan (DMP) and the first Plan for Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation (PDCE), have been delivered. In addition, the Stakeholder Engagement Strategy has been finalised, setting out the technical, collaborative, and participatory backbone of the project.

Scientific and Technical Progress

Human Cohorts (WP1)
Significant progress has been achieved in the harmonization of human cohort data. The project now encompasses 22 cohorts across six European countries, representing approximately 17,000 participants, from prenatal stages to older adulthood.
A FAIR-by-design, harmonised cohort and sample inventory has been completed, together with a shared codebook to support standardised analyses and ensure interoperability across studies.

Geospatial Analysis Capability
ENVESOME has integrated multi-source environmental datasets — including air quality, land use, soil, traffic, noise, and light — to strengthen its geospatial analysis capacity. Refined exposure modelling methods have been developed based on participants’ addresses, with strict adherence to privacy and data protection principles, ensuring that no geolocation data are shared.

Urban Living Labs (ULLs)

Launched in Month 6, the Urban Living Labs are progressing toward the Month 15 milestone on co-creation strategies. Currently, 10 ULLs are active across Europe — in Athens, Thessaloniki, Ljubljana, Barcelona, Madrid, Porto, Vienna, Berlin, Łódź, and Aarhus.
Each ULL actively engages local stakeholders in developing community-driven interventions and participatory data collection activities, connecting scientific innovation with real-world urban and environmental challenges.

ENVESOME Hands-On Workshop on Emerging Pollutants Measurement at NCSR “Demokritos”

An ENVESOME hands-on training workshop was organized in the NCSR & «Demokritos» premises in Athens, Greece. The purpose of the workshop was to train the project partners involved in WP2, on the installation and operation of the emerging pollutants measurement equipment (UFPs, Black Carbon, Bioaerosols) as well as in data management. The duration of the workshop was 8 hours,

during which presentations were given, along with a live demonstration of the instruments that will be used in the measurement campaigns across the 10 European cities. A booklet containing all the information on the operation of the instruments was distributed to all participants. Afterwards, a visit to the NCSRD laboratories (AirTechLab and Mass Spectrometry and Dioxins Lab) and the ENVESOME monitoring station followed. Representatives from AUTH, NHRF, AIT, ISCII, INSA, IDAEA, NIOM and JSI participated in the training. The Atmospheric Chemistry & Innovative Technologies Laboratory (AirTechLab/NCSRD) was responsible for organising and successfully conducting the workshop.

Outlook

With these early achievements, ENVESOME has laid a solid foundation for its next phase — generating high-impact insights into environmental exposures and health outcomes. The project’s forthcoming work will inform evidence-based policy, support urban and environmental planning, and ultimately contribute to healthier, more sustainable, and equitable communities across Europe.
