Addressing complex workplace exposures through research
Waste sorting facilities present particularly challenging working conditions. Employees may be exposed to dust, noise and harmful biological agents, including microorganisms that can affect respiratory health and the immune system. Understanding and mitigating these risks requires a multidisciplinary and evidence-based approach.
Within the framework of the EU-funded EXPOSIM project, our partners from CIOP-PIB are undertaking joint activities with ELWOZ ECO to better characterise these exposures and their health implications. The work includes:
- Environmental monitoring in waste sorting plants
- Detailed ergonomic and microbiological risk assessments at specific workstations
- Analysis of selected health parameters among workers
- Investigation of how the human immune system responds to exposure to harmful biological factors
These activities aim to generate robust scientific evidence that can inform improved workplace practices and targeted protective measures.
From evidence to implementation
A key objective of the collaboration is not only to understand risks, but to translate findings into practical solutions. By combining scientific expertise from CIOP-PIB with operational knowledge from ELWOZ ECO, the partnership is working towards:
- Implementation of innovative individual and collective protective measures
- Reduction of exposure to noise, dust and biological hazards
- Optimisation of workflows and ergonomics in sorting operations
- Continuous improvement of occupational health and safety standards
This approach reflects the core ambition of EXPOSIM to move from exposure assessment to actionable strategies that protect workers’ health.
A shared commitment to safer workplaces
For ELWOZ ECO, investing in occupational health and safety is central to ensuring that employees can work in safe and supportive conditions. The collaboration with CIOP-PIB demonstrates how industry and research can work together to address complex challenges and drive innovation in workplace safety. On the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, this initiative underscores the importance of integrating scientific research into everyday practice. Through EXPOSIM, partners across Europe continue to contribute to safer, healthier working environments by generating knowledge and supporting its uptake where it matters most.
