Working Group 5: Adverse Outcomes Pathways

Working Group (WG) 5 focuses on applying the Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) framework to link environmental exposures to health outcomes relevant to non-communicable diseases. Led by ENVESOME and EXPOSIGNALZ, the group supports the integration of mechanistic evidence across ExpoHealthNet projects.

WG5 works to structure scientific evidence around shared biological pathways and biomarkers, enabling improved comparability across projects and supporting both modelling and policy translation activities within the cluster.

WG5 objectives:

Key activities Target audience
Development and application of AOP frameworks: WG5 coordinates the use of AOPs to describe causal links between environmental stressors and adverse health effects.

Cross-project alignment and comparability: The group supports harmonisation of pathways and biomarkers to enable consistent analysis across different studies and projects.

Integration of mechanistic evidence: WG5 structures biological and toxicological evidence to support robust interpretation of health impacts.

Support for modelling and policy translation: The group provides inputs for modelling activities (WG4) and contributes to evidence-based policy outputs (WG1).
✔ Toxicologists and environmental health researchers
✔ Modelling experts and data scientists
✔ Policymakers and public health authorities
✔ EU agencies and organisations working on chemical risk assessment

WG5 operates as a collaborative platform connecting projects working on environmental exposures and health outcomes. By aligning methodologies and structuring mechanistic knowledge, the group strengthens the scientific basis for cross-project analysis, supports integrated modelling efforts, and contributes to evidence-informed policy development across ExpoHealthNet.
