ENVESOME

ENVESOME is a 4-year Horizon Europe research project dedicated to understanding how complex environmental exposures affect human health, with a focus on urban areas where over 75% of EU citizens reside. Coordinated by the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF), the project brings together 16 partner institutions from 8 European countries, forming a strong interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral consortium.

Urban populations are increasingly exposed to air pollution, noise, artificial light, and hazardous chemicals from waste. These stressors, combined with the effects of climate change and social inequality, contribute significantly to the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, neurological, and mental health conditions.

ENVESOME takes a holistic approach by integrating human biomonitoring, environmental monitoring, in vitro studies, multi-omics, systems biology, and advanced sensor technologies. The project’s findings will be applied through Urban Living Labs, where communities co-design and implement solutions for healthier environments.

Beyond research, ENVESOME will translate insights into actionable tools such as AI-driven decision support systems for policymakers, intelligent chatbots for healthcare professionals, and personalized mobile apps for citizens.

Its mission is to bridge science, policy, and society, promoting health equity and sustainable change across Europe.
